Later this week, at the Finali Mondiali in Abu Dhabi, Ferrari will be unveiling the LaFerrari-based 1,050-hp FXX K. That’s K for KERS, a reference to the hybrid car’s 190-hp electric motor.
Like the Enzo-derived FXX and 599XX before it, the FXX K is a slick-tired, track-only machine designed to test new technology for upcoming Ferrari road cars. Maranello’s engineers have clearly been hard at work in the wind tunnel, as evidenced by the model’s dual-plane front splitter and unusual divided rear wing, the result of which is a reported 30-percent increase in maximum downforce.
Under the skin, the FXX K boasts an additional 60 hp from its naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V12 engine, along with 27 extra electric ponies (although total system torque is down by 52 lb-ft). The LaFerrari’s carbon-ceramic brakes, magnetorheological shock absorbers, dual-clutch gearbox and electronic driver’s aids have all been reworked and/or upgraded for FXX K use.
We expect 30-40 examples will be built. As with the existing FXX and 599XX programs, owners will be able to drive their cars at select Ferrari Challenge events around the world.
